Dear Members and Friends,

Thank you for electing me as the President of the first session of Intelligent Transportation Systems - Hong Kong (ITS-HK). I am pleased to announce further good news since the release of the last issue of our Newsletter. First, representatives from our sister institutions in mainland China, America, Canada, Japan and United Kingdom will sign a joint declaration with us on 11 October 2000 at our Inauguration Ceremony.

Secondly, our Vice President, Ir Dr Alex Chan, will represent the Institution to be the moderator of one of the technical sessions at the Seventh ITS World Congress to be held in Italy in November 2000. Furthermore, jointly with the Hong Kong Tourist Association, we are in the process of bidding for the ITS World Congress in 2004 or 2007. To enhance our competitiveness, your contribution of ideas will be very much appreciated.

Do be a part of us and I look forward to seeing you in our Asia Pacific Electronic Symposium 2000 and Intelligent Transport Technologies Forum on 12-13 October 2000.

More than 50 members were present at our First Annual General Meeting held on 11 September 2000 (Monday) at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Meeting began with a status report from the ITS-HK Convenor, Ir John Sze, highlighting the achievements of the Preparatory Committee set up since 14 December 1999. The Financial Report and the work of the Preparatory Committee were also adopted. Council Members of the first session of ITS-HK were then noted by the floor members. (AGM Minutes)

Our Objectives:

Formulate standards for participation in National and International ITS standardization processes
Provide forum for determination of user's requirements and solutions
Examine non-technical and institutional issues (privacy, intellectual property, liability etc.)
Encourage R & D of ITS technologies for multi-disciplinary partnerships among public and private sectors
Promote the awareness of benefits and advise the importance of ITS to the public and decision-makers
Enhance interflow among local, Mainland and international ITS industry
Organize members' activities for the promotion of ITS in Hong Kong SAR
